Kansas City Barbeque Society Sanctioned Cook-off
to be held next weekend in Parsons

PARSONS, KS — Balloons, Bikes, Blues and BBQ will feature a KCBS sanctioned BBQ Cook-off slated for Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17 at Forest Park in Parsons, Kan.

This event is slated to be a State Championship Cook-off as presented by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Teams will come in from all across the region bringing their talent to cook-up some mouth watering barbeque and compete for nearly $4,000 in prizes.

“Being a new contest to the area, we were not sure what to expect,” said Labette County Tourism Director, Jim Zaleski. “We have had inquiries about the competition from as far away as Poland.”

Participants will register and get meat inspections done before the cook’s meeting which is scheduled for Friday at 5 p.m. at the Parsons Recreation Center. The contest will kick-off after that meeting. Contestants will compete for prizes in four categories including Pork Ribs, Chicken, Beef Brisket, and Pork Shoulders.

“Many of the contestants have agreed to cooking extra pork shoulders for us to sell,” Zaleski said. “We have teamed up with Parsons Habitat for Humanity to sell pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and a drink for $5.”

Lunches will be served from about 11 a.m. until the food runs out. A portion of all concessions will be shared with Parsons Habitat for Humanity. “It’s a win, win,” said Kari West, Parsons Habitat for Humanity representative. “Everyone can enjoy a great barbecue lunch while helping out a community organization.”

Judging for the KCBS BBQ Contest will begin at Noon on Saturday, October 17. Winners will be announced at the Seaton Family Pavilion at Forest Park just before the Area 51 concert.
